The Laboratory of Translation & Natural Language Processing (EMEL), officially founded in 2004 (Official Government Gazette 1625/2-11-2004), includes the following units:

EMEL addresses both educational and research needs in the following scientific fields:

  • Translation theory and Translation criticism
  • Translation and Intercultural Mediation
  • Machine Translation
  • Terminology-Terminography
  • Analysis and Processing of oral and written speech
  • Information processing and transmission

EMEL undertakes the following actions:

  • Training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and professional training of graduates of Faculties of Philosophy, Education and Engineering in subjects related to the fields of the Laboratory.
  • Research to solve problems related to the fields covered by EMEL, independently or in cooperation with universities and research centers, private institutions for research, production and service provision, public services and organisations.
  • Organisation of scientific lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events, publications, editing and invitations to Greek and foreign renowned scientists.
  • Service provision to individuals in accordance with the PD 159/1984 (A 53

Research conducted in EMEL covers the fields of theoretical, applied and computational linguistics and translation. Below you will find an indicative list of the Lab’s research activities:

  • Theoretical and applied studies on topics related to translation
  • Translation from and into Greek and French
  • Development of training programmes on specialised translation and interpreting
  • Compilation of monolingual electronic dictionaries for the Greek language
  • Design of computational tools for the automatic conjugation of simple and complex lexical units, as well as for the control, consistency and enrichment of electronic dictionaries.
  • Development of standardised grammars for the automatic identification of lexical terms and the removal of lexical ambiguities in texts.
  • Compilation of monolingual and multilingual text corpora, both written and spoken 
  • Compilation of learner corpora
  • Development and continuous improvement of language resources for Greek
  • Development of tools for the automatic processing of named entities
  • Development of tools for spell checking and spelling
  • Development of semantic networks
  • Creation of bilingual databases (with sports and stock market terms) for semi-automatic translation
  • Compilation of electronic dictionaries of 19,000 verbs, 67,000 simple nouns, 29,000 multiword units, 40,000 simple adjectives, 54,000 simple proper nouns, 4,000 compound proper nouns, 12,000 simple adverbs, 4,900 compound adverbs, 3,000 place names as well as simple and complex grammatical words such as pronouns, modifiers, conjunctions, particles and prepositions, 37,000 sports terms and 8,650 stock exchange terms
